What is Acne-prone Skin?

Types of acne:

  • Non-inflammatory = small (whiteheads or blackheads)
  • Inflammatory = larger and usually filled with white pus (aka pustules & they  hurt)

Best to know which type of skin you have in order to treat it because, although acne is linked to oily skin types, people with dry skin can have acne too.

How to tell what your skin type is if you have acne-prone skin?

Do this test:

  1. Wash your face with an unscented gentle soap, then pat dry (don't add any products to your face either)
  2. Determine if your skin gets...
  • Shiny (whole face) = Oily Skin
  • Semi-Shiny (cheeks & "T-zone") = Combination Skin
  • Dry/Rough = Dry Skin
  • N/A (neither of the above) = Normal Skin

The key to managing acne-prone skin? Keep the pores unclogged!

Skincare Routine

Daily AM

  1. Cleanser
  2. Toner
  3. Moisturizer
  4. SPF
  5. Optional: Makeup

Daily PM

  1. Cleanser
  2. Optional: Makeup Remover
  3. Toner
  4. Optional: Spot Treatment
  5. Moisturizer

  1. Exfoliator
  2. Mask

And a great way to really get these products to work well with your skin is to use beauty tools.

  • Wash face 2x a day
  • Don't scrub or use harsh exfoliants
  • Don't pick or pop at your pimples (although you can "extract" it safely)
  • Wash/Change beauty tools frequently (makeup brushes, pillow cases, etc)
  • Look for "noncomedogenic" products (aka "won't clog pores")
  • Avoid harsh ingredient irritants (i.e. alcohol and SLS/sulfates)
  • Keep oil from your scalp/hair off of your face (especially at night)

If natural products aren't doing the trick, go for something more heavy duty like these superstar ingredients: Salicylic Acid (unclogs pores and reduces inflammation) & Benzoyl Peroxide (kills bacteria). However when in doubt, see your family doctor or Dermatologist.
